No matter what industry we are in, no matter what our role, one of the most important aspects of our success is the perception of others. I know many would argue this point, and bring in the importance of “being ourselves”. I don’t dispute that in any way, but we should also give thought to how others connect to us.
Our world is built on interaction and relationships. For an individual to be hired for a job you need to first make a good impression. For anyone in sales or marketing to obtain clients and make sales they must gain trust. For a brand to be recognized and accepted it must show value in one way or another. The connection, that’s what it is all about, and it all starts with perception.
There is a story of a substitute teacher who was told that the class they were going to teach was exceptional student, all high achievers. When the teacher worked with the students they did perform well, achieving high grades. The class was actually “D” and “C” students, but when treated as high performers they came through. Whether this story is true or not I think there is truth in the idea that perceptions influence the way we see others.
I attend several events where people make connections. I find it interesting to see the way some people filter out so many people, based on some unseen criteria that they don’t often think about. What influenced their opinion before there was ever any exchange of words or introductions?
In PR and marketing their is the concept of branding, the image presented to the world that gives visual representation of the intent, message, or product. In order to define what we offer to the world we must understand it within ourselves. When the product is a service, and the message is your own, its even more important to have clarity.
I’ve personally spent many months in defining my own message, not the day to day words but the foundation on which everything stands. Recently I launched Mystic Mechanic, my new branding. I use the phrase, “See Beyond Expectations”, and by this I mean that our true power comes to us when we see just how powerful we are, and identify our own abilities. What is in the world pales in comparison to your own offerings, and if what is “out there” is truly important to you then it is good to have a strong enough foundation to support what you seek.
Perceptions count, in how we see others but more importantly how we see ourselves. Visit Mystic Mechanic, and connect with me when you are ready to take that next step.
