Getting a Handle on Success

When the little spark of idea exploded in my mind I had some fun with the title.  It’s all so hand-oriented.  I finally decided to go with “Getting a Handle On Success” for two simple reasons:  It’s a good title, and “just get the article done instead of spending all your time on the title”.   Point made: the package may be pretty but its content that we all want, that full belly, toothpick to the teeth, meaty quality of a point well made.

Let me share with you the springboard for this article.  This morning I realized I left the desktop computer on (again), still logged in to Skype.  Who happened to be online but Scott Weller, one of my great connections from CEO Space in July, 2009.  Scott and I have done an excellent job of staying in touch, in fact he wrote an article for this blog.  We spoke via chat about our progress in our own projects, and Scott redirected me to read his recent posts.  Later I went back to his blog and did one of those fast scrolls, you know, the kind where you get headlines and a general feel for the topics.  Wow, Scott, I love it!

Scott and I certainly do share some common beliefs in Succeeding in Style, that is creating success in a way that supports and enriches every aspect of who we are.  Why should we wait till the weekend to celebrate self?  Every step along the way can be a complete meal – dessert included!

One of the questions people ask, or should ask, is, “How do I turn a day in the office, or in the field, working for someone else into something that’s for me?”   Great question!  First let’s clarify – giving 100% and receiving 100% does not necessarily mean being center stage or having others bowing to you.  It means complete involvement.

Start with one basic question in ANY situation:  How does this serve me?   Let’s take an example:  You’re in the office, earning your paycheck, facing a problem.  Your boss is angry about it, your associate is making excuses, the client is freaking out.  “And I’m supposed to ask how this is serving me?  I think of anything its telling me what I don’t want”. How many of us have that thought in the back of our minds saying, “It’s just not worth it”, locking in place the idea that you get less out of life than you put into it!

Get a handle on success.  You can see this as an opportunity to change the tone of the event and turn it into a win-win situation.  You can see it as your act of service to help someone else succeed, and then feel good about your accomplishment.  You can mentor your associate through your actions, showing them how to put their energy into solution, not excuses.  The list goes on!

Getting a handle on success is easy because you do it one step at a time, one solution or thought or action at a time. With each hand you have five distinct digits to count on – so count on yourself.  On your right hand count five actions you did toward success today, even if its just a step.  On your left hand count five thoughts, ideas or beliefs you brought into your own consciousness today that acknowledged your skill in creating your own success.  Give yourself a “high five” – okay that was a little silly, but why not?

Getting a handle on success means being in control of your own destiny, acknowledging that you make the choices not on the outside circumstances but on how you make it all work.  Success is easier than we think, because we are more than just thinking, we are doing and being as well.
